Andre Onana has completed a season-long loan move to Turkish club Trabzonspor from Manchester United.

The deal was reported by The Athletic on Saturday, with Trabzonspor wanting Onana to be available for their match against Fenerbahce on September 14.

What happened?

Onana, 29, is yet to feature in the Premier League for Manchester United this season, with his only appearance coming in his side’s Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town on a date prior to September 11, 2025.

He missed United’s pre-season tour due to a hamstring injury and was omitted from their first two Premier League matchday squads.

Why it matters for Andre Onana

United signed goalkeeper Senne Lammens, 23, from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day for an initial fee of €21million plus €4m in add-ons.

Onana joined United from Inter in July 2023 for an initial €51m (£43.9m, $57.4m) plus €4m in add-ons.

He replaced David de Gea as United’s No 1 after the Spanish goalkeeper departed following the conclusion of his contract.

What comes next?

Onana has made 102 appearances for United and kept 24 clean sheets, starting 72 of United’s 76 Premier League matches across his first two seasons at the club.

He was not selected for April’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle after he was at fault for both goals during his side’s Europa League draw with Lyon three days earlier.

Onana’s United contract runs until 2028, but he will spend the 2025-26 season with Trabzonspor.

Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell analyzed the situation, stating that United did not intend to sign a goalkeeper when the transfer window opened but circumstances changed when Onana came back for pre-season.

Onana reported an issue with his hamstring on day one, and then a full injury on day two, but this left staff questioning what shape he was in after the summer to suffer the problem straight away.

For Ruben Amorim, the setback left a lasting impression, with Altay Bayindir selected in the first three Premier League games.

Onana was left out of the squad entirely for the Arsenal match despite feeling he was fit to play, with Tom Heaton named on the bench.
